Idris Elba Is Back as Luther Movie Begins Filming for Netflix

Idris Elba has confirmed the return of his unorthodox detective, Luther, with the actor sharing an image of himself wearing the iconic coat and tie as filming commences on Netflix’s upcoming movie. Captioning the images from behind-the-scenes with a simple “Oi……I’m back!,” the update is sure to have Luther fans excited for the characters return since the series finale back in 2019.

Fans of the crime series have been crying out for a Luther Movie for quite some time, with Idris Elba having teased the feature film project ever since the show ended a few years ago. The BBC series follows Elba as the title character John Luther, a passionate detective, who ends up befriending a psychopath and murderer whom he fails to arrest due to lack of evidence. Over time, the pair grow closer and often work together in order to solve all manner of horrific criminal cases.

The show has been met with much acclaim from both critics and audiences alike thanks to the gripping central performances from both Idris Elba and Ruth Wilson, as well as the deliciously pulpy approach to the grittiness of the London underworld. During its run, Luther has earned Elba a Critics’ Choice Television Award, Golden Globe Award, and Screen Actors Guild Award for his magnetic, intense central performance, with the series itself having received eleven Primetime Emmy Award nominations in various categories over the years, including four nominations of Elba for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or Movie.

The idea of a Luther movie has long been on the cards, with season 5 constructed specifically to pave the way for the detective’s arrival in feature length form, should the opportunity ever present itself. Exactly what escapades Luther would be getting up to in his first movie outing remains unknown, but in the past Elba has revealed a few scant details about the potential storyline once the detective swaggers his way back onto screens, with the actor saying that “It will be more murder, more Volvos, more frowning Luther… essentially we just want to try to take it to a much bigger audience and scale, and perhaps international as well.”

Several clues regarding the supporting cast of characters that will clash with Luther have since been revealed, with Elba set to be joined by Andy Serkis (War for the Planet of the Apes, The Lord of the Rings) and Cynthia Erivo (Bad Times at the El Royale, Genius: Aretha). Their respective characters have been described as a “double threat” to the titular detective, with Erivo reportedly playing a fellow detective who will become “Luther’s nemesis,” while Serkis has been dubbed “the story’s criminal villain,” which will no doubt give the actor the chance to once again chew the scenery in the same delightful way he does as Marvel villain Ulysses Klaw in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Black Panther.

The Luther movie was finally confirmed in September, and series creator Neil Cross has written the script for the feature, with Jamie Payne set to sit in the director’s chair. Though the movie does not yet have a release date, with filming now underway audiences can likely expect it to hit Netflix sometime in 2022.
