Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin Unmasks in Spider-Man: No Way Home Clip

Along with a Villain Panel video, the official Spider-Man YouTube channel showed Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin unmasked for the the first time.

We are heading into the last full week before Spider-Man: No Way Home arrives in cinemas on December 15th or 17th depending on where in the world you are, and now the big guns are coming out on the final promotion push for the movie, even though it could be argued that Sony and Marvel Studios could easily stop any kind of advertising around now and the film would still become the biggest movie of the year. Instead we have been given some new footage and a whole host of interviews with some of the villains of the film, which includes Jamie Foxx, Alfred Molina and Willem Dafoe, whose face is finally unmasked in new footage released in the video.

Since the final trailer revealed the Green Goblin riding the Goblin Glider, some had begun to question whether James Franco’s Goblin from Spiderman 3 in 2007 could be putting in an appearance. Considering we are in the kind of territory where anything is possible, it would not have been the most out-there theory, but it looks like the hooded figure seen on board the Glider is definitely Dafoe’s villain thanks to the new very brief look at the character in his hooded costume and without his mask.

The new clip is seen in the opening moments of the Villains Panel video published on the official Spider-Man YouTube channel, which can be seen in full below, and during the conversation, Dafoe explained how returning to the franchise and wearing the Goblin’s costume now was much more comfortable than 20 years ago in his original appearance back in the first ever big screen outing of Spider-Man. Dafoe said:

“I stood there for eight hours and they put different pre-form pieces on me. Now, they scan me and they can design it and then make the costume, and then try it on me. It’s a huge leap in the technology. They’re more flexible. We can do more things with them.”

When it comes to the Goblin’s new look, which may or may not be as seen in the trailers, Dafoe cautiously teased that the villain has been given an upgrade in Spider-Man: No Way Home compared to his previous appearance, which in turn would suggest that this version of the Goblin is not the variant seen in Sam Raimi’s original movie. Dafoe teased, “It looks a little different…Old Norman and the Goblin are further down the line and they have a few more tricks up their sleeve. So it’s not an exact — There have been upgrades on the costume, let’s say.”

We know from multiple clips that the villains in Spider-Man: No Way Home are all expected to meet their maker at the hands of the web-slinger in their own universes, and as that already happened to many of them in their previous appearances it would be unlikely that those exact characters would then be appearing in the MCU’s universe but have upgrades costume changes. With there potentially being many other dimensions and timelines in play, it would not be so hard to expect that these villains could be all variants to those we have already seen. All will be revealed in a couple of weeks when Spider-Man: No Way Home arrives in theaters.
